“Cut Grass” is the third release of Arya Zappa.
Set amongst the terrifying imagery of Philip Larkin’s short poem of the same title, the title track purrs;
“Cut grass lies frail / Brief is the breath / Mown stalks exhale / Long, long the death”.
Zappa prowls over her suburban hunting grounds, wrapping herself around the words in a beautifully observed detachment that luxuriously oozes melancholy.
Each song on the EP is obsessed by details of the night, using the evocative atmosphere of her new wave past to perfectly describe our dystopian present day. As in Larkin’s poem, her music acts as a symbol of the futility of our futures, human kind as fertilizer.
